The DeWitt family has been involved with the Cardinals since the early 1900s when Bill DeWitt Sr. became a minority shareholder in the team. In 1947, he took over as majority owner and held onto the team until 1953, when he sold it to Anheuser-Busch.

In 1996, William DeWitt Jr. led a group that purchased the Cardinals from Anheuser-Busch for $150 million. The sale made him the first non-brewery owner of the team in nearly 40 years. Under DeWitt’s ownership, the team has experienced great success, winning two World Series titles (2006 and 2011).

The Cardinals are currently valued at $2.55 billion, making them the seventh-most valuable baseball team in the world.

Founded in 1892, the St. Louis Cardinals are one of the most storied franchises in Major League Baseball history. The Cardinals have won 11 World Series titles since their inception, more than any other National League team and second only to the New York Yankees.

Currently, the Cardinals are one of the most successful teams in baseball, having made the playoffs 16 times in the last 22 years. The team is also known for its strong fan support, regularly ranking near the top of MLB in attendance.

The Early Years 

The St. Louis Cardinals were founded in 1882 as an expansion team by brothers Chris and Frank Von der Ahe. Originally called the St. Louis Browns, they quickly changed their name to the Cardinals after acquiring future Hall of Famer Charles Comiskey from the then-defunct Cincinnati Red Stockings franchise.

The team went on to win its first NL pennant in 1886 but lost to the Boston Beaneaters in the World Series that year. St Louis became a dominant force in professional baseball throughout much of the 20th century, winning five World Series titles between 1926-1944 and eight more since 1964.

They also won 12 division titles between 1996-2015, making them one of only two teams (the other being Atlanta Braves) to have won more than 10 division championships since Major League Baseball began using divisions in 1969. 

The Modern Era 

The modern era of Cardinals baseball was kick-started by Tony La Russa’s appointment as manager before the 1996 season, which eventually led to three consecutive NL Central Division titles from 2000-2002 and a World Series title in 2006 under his tenure as skipper. 

Since La Russa’s departure, Mike Matheny assumed managerial duties in 2012. He led the Cards to three straight playoff appearances while posting winning records each year until his dismissal during the 2018 season when manager Mike Shildt took over as interim manager before being promoted permanently during the 2019 season.

After a Wild Card loss to the Dodgers, Shildt was relieved of his duties and replaced with 35-year-old Oliver Marmol.
