Early History of the Franchise
The Minnesota Twins have seen a lot over their more than 120-year history. They first began as the Washington Nationals in 1901 before moving to Minneapolis to become the Minneapolis Millers in 1902.
They then moved back to Washington, D.C., where they became known as the Senators from 1905 until 1960. In 1961, they moved back to Minnesota and became known as the Twins, playing under that name ever since.

Since their inception, the Twins have been one of MLB’s most successful franchises, winning three World Series championships (in 1924, 1987, and 1991), 6 American League (AL) Pennants, and eight AL Central Division titles. They were also the first team to go from last place one year to winning a World Series championship the next year (1987-1988).
The Ron Gardenhire Era & MVP Joe Mauer
In 2002, former utility infielder Ron Gardenhire was hired by owner Carl Pohlad and general manager Terry Ryan to become the new manager of the Twins.
Over his 13-year tenure from 2002-2014, he led them to six division titles – including four straight from 2002-2005 – en route to becoming one of only three managers in franchise history with at least six division titles (the other two being Tom Kelly with seven and Bucky Harris with nine).
He also saw Joe Mauer become an MVP award winner & perennial All-Star during his reign while also establishing players such as Justin Morneau (2006 MVP), Michael Cuddyer (2009 All-Star) & Torii Hunter (2002-2007 All-Star) amongst others, during his managerial tenure.
