Stephen M. Ross currently owns the Miami Dolphins franchise and has been the team’s principal owner since 2009. Prior to Ross, the team was owned by H. Wayne Huizenga from 1993-2009. Before Huizenga, the team was owned by a group of investors led by Joseph Robbie from 1965-1992. The Robbie family originally purchased the team for $4 million in 1965.

In 2009, Ross paid $1 billion for a 50% stake in the Dolphins. In January 2008, Huizenga put the team up for sale with an asking price of $1.1 billion. Several months later, Ross agreed to buy a majority stake in the team from Huizenga. The deal was finalized in October of that year, making Ross the principal owner of the Dolphins.

The Miami Dolphins are a professional American football team based in the Miami metropolitan area. The Dolphins compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) East division. The Dolphins play their home games at Hard Rock Stadium in the northern Miami Gardens, Florida suburb. The franchise began play in 1966 as an expansion team that joined the NFL as part of an AFL–NFL merger.

The team made its first Super Bowl appearance in Super Bowl VI, losing to the Dallas Cowboys, 24–3. The following year, the Dolphins completed a perfect regular season and then defeated the Minnesota Vikings, 24–7, in Super Bowl VIII to win their second consecutive Super Bowl.
