She is the daughter of Jerry Buss, who purchased the team in 1979 for $20 million dollars. Upon his death in 2013, Jeanie assumed control of the franchise. While Buss is the Lakers’ majority owner, he has some minority partners. These include investment firms Guggenheim Partners and Capital Research & Management Company. Together, these minority owners own approximately 24% of the team.
The Buss family has been hugely successful as owners of the franchise, as the Lakers have won 10 NBA championships during their tenure. They are known for attracting big-name stars in free agency and being must-watch or “showtime.” The most recent example is the signing of LeBron James and the acquisition of Anthony Davis.
According to Forbes, as of the 2023-2024 season, the Los Angeles Lakers are worth $7.1 billion dollars. This makes them the third most valuable National Basketball Association (NBA) franchise.
