The Lions franchise was originally established as the Portsmouth Spartans in 1929 and joined the NFL in 1930 as part of the league’s expansion into the Midwest. Despite success within the NFL, they could not survive financially in Portsmouth and relocated to Detroit for the 1934 season. The Lions have won four NFL Championships but have yet to play in a Super Bowl. They are one of four current teams and the only NFC team to have not yet played in the Super Bowl.
The Detroit Lion’s most recent major success came in 1991 when they finished the regular season with a 10–4 record and won the franchise’s first-ever playoff game en route to their first NFC Championship appearance since 1957.
