The current owner of the Chicago Cubs franchise is Tom Ricketts, who purchased the team in 2009 for 700 million. Prior to Ricketts, the team was owned by the Tribune Company. The Ricketts family also owns the Chicago Cubs Foundation and Wrigley Field.
On the field, they made a number of key acquisitions, including signing pitcher Jon Lester in 2014 and bringing in manager Joe Maddon in 2015. These moves paid off handsomely, as the Cubs won their first World Series in 108 years in 2016. Ending a century of suffering for fans on the North Side of Chicago.
The Cubs (as of 2024) are currently valued at $4.225 billion, making them the fourth-most valuable franchise in MLB.
The Chicago Cubs are a professional baseball team based in Chicago, Illinois. The Cubs compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a National League (NL) Central division member club. The Cubs are one of two major league teams in Chicago; the other, the Chicago White Sox, is a member of the American League (AL) Central division.
They play their home games at Wrigley Field, located on the city’s North Side. The team is also informally known as “the North Siders,” “the Cubs,” or simply as “the North Side.” Some of the greatest players in franchise history include names like Ernie Banks, Ron Santo, Billy Williams, and Ryne Sandberg.
The Chicago White Stockings were founded in 1876 as part of the National League’s original eight teams. They were initially known as the “White Stockings” due to their white uniforms, but they changed their name to the Cubs in 1902 when they adopted navy blue and red uniforms.
The early years saw some success on the field, with six pennants (league championships) between 1880 and 1910. However, they could not win a World Series championship during this period, despite appearing in three World Series (1906, 1907, 1908).
The Golden Age was marked by unparalleled success for the team on and off the field. On it, they won four National League Pennants (1910, 1918, 1929 & 1945). Most notably, they finally won two World Series titles (1907 & 1908).
Off it, Wrigley Field was built in 1914 and served as both a home stadium for baseball games and an entertainment venue for other sports events such as boxing matches and even football games. By 1945 however, there would be another World Series drought, with no championships being won until 2016.
The Cubs finally won it all in 2016 after 108 years without a championship victory. After coming back from a 3-1 deficit against Cleveland Indians in that year’s World Series to win 8-7 in 10 innings of Game 7. Arguably one of the greatest games ever – dreams that seemed almost impossible suddenly became a reality for millions of fans around the world.
Since then, the team has remained competitive, having several winning seasons and even returning to the NLCS in 2017. As of 2023, they are in a retooling phase as they look to create the next great Cubs core after several years of success.
