A group led by Tony Ressler currently owns the Atlanta Hawks. The group purchased the team in 2015 for $730 million. Prior to Ressler’s group, the team was owned by Bruce Levenson and his Atlanta Spirit LLC group. Levenson sold the team after it was revealed that he had made racially insensitive comments about the team’s fans.
Ressler is the co-founder of Ares Management, a global alternative asset manager, and has been a lifelong fan of the Hawks, and he has said that owning the team is a “dream come true.”
According to Forbes, as of the 2023-2024 season, the Atlanta Hawks are worth $3.8 billion dollars. This makes them the 19st most valuable National Basketball Association (NBA) franchise.
The Atlanta Hawks are an American professional basketball team based in Atlanta, Georgia. The Hawks compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference Southeast Division. The team plays its home games at State Farm Arena since 1999.
The Atlanta Hawks were founded in 1946 as the Buffalo Bisons. In 1951, they moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and became the Milwaukee Hawks. They relocated again in 1955 when they moved to St. Louis, Missouri, and were renamed the St. Louis Hawks. In 1968, the team moved to Atlanta and took on its current name.
Some of the greatest players in Atlanta Hawks history include names like Dominique Wilkins, Bob Pettit, and Josh Smith. These are just a few talented athletes who have donned the Hawks jersey over the years.
The Hawks have won one NBA title (1958). The franchise has also qualified for the playoffs in 47 seasons (not including the strike-shortened 1998–99 season), won 12 division titles, and advanced two times to the Eastern Conference Finals.
