Who Owns The Arizona Diamondbacks?

The Arizona Diamondbacks franchise is owned by a group of investors led by Ken Kendrick, who paid $238 million for the team in 2004. Prior to Kendrick, the team was owned by Jerry Colangelo, who had been the team’s first CEO and majority owner since its inception.

Kendrick is also the current chairman and CEO of the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation, the team’s official charity. The Arizona Diamondbacks franchise is valued at $1.425 billion (21st in baseball) as of the 2024 season.

About The Arizona Diamondbacks Franchise

The Arizona Diamondbacks (often referred to as the D-Backs or Dbacks) are a Major League Baseball team based in Phoenix, Arizona. The team was founded in 1998 and plays in the National League West Division. Since their inception, the Diamondbacks have won one World Series championship (in 2001), five division titles, and six playoff appearances.

From Expansion to Contender

The Diamondbacks were born on November 16, 1995, when Major League Baseball awarded an expansion franchise to Phoenix—the first expansion team since 1976. The franchise had its inaugural game on March 31, 1998, against the Colorado Rockies at Bank One Ballpark (now Chase Field).

It would be a few years before they established themselves as contenders; however, their breakthrough season came in 1999 when they posted a 100-62 record and made their first-ever playoff appearance—a three-game sweep of the New York Mets in the National League Division Series.

MVPs & World Series Champs

In 2001, three years after entering the league, the Diamondbacks—led by MVP Randy Johnson—defeated the New York Yankees in Game 7 of an epic seven-game series to capture their first World Series championship.

They would repeat as NL West Champions in 2002 and 2007 but failed to make it back to another World Series despite some solid regular season performances over those years.

After missing out on postseason play for several seasons, they returned to relevance with an NLDS win over Colorado in 2017—their most recent playoff appearance.
