So who owns Liverpool FC? One of England’s most successful soccer clubs, Liverpool FC, is currently owned by Fenway Sports Group (FSG). This American company also owns the Boston Red Sox baseball team. FSG is headed by John W. Henry, the principal owner of the Red Sox.
FSG was founded in 2001 by John W. Henry and Tom Werner, who also served as the company’s first CEO. Henry is the current principal owner of the Red Sox and Liverpool FC, while Werner is the chairman of Liverpool FC.
Under FSG’s ownership, Liverpool FC has seen renewed success on the pitch, winning the Premier League title in 2019 and reaching the final of the UEFA Champions League in 2018. The club has also invested heavily in its Anfield stadium, opening a new main stand in 2016.
In October 2010, FSG acquired a 50% stake in Liverpool FC from previous owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks for a reported £300 million (US$476 million). This made FSG the club’s majority shareholder, with Henry becoming the club’s principal owner.
FSG increased its stake in Liverpool FC to 100% in April 2012, following a deal with Mill Financial that saw Hicks and Gillett’s remaining shares bought out. The total cost of FSG’s takeover of Liverpool FC was £558 million (US$879 million).
Henry was born in Quincy, Illinois, in 1949 and attended the University of California, Berkeley, before transferring to Yale University, where he studied economics. He then worked as a commodities trader for several companies, including pirate radio station KBLA in Los Angeles and EF Hutton in New York City.
In 1989, Henry founded John W. Henry & Company (JWHC), a financial trading firm that specializes in futures contracts. The company was highly successful, and by the early 2000s, Henry was worth an estimated $400 million.
In 2001, Henry co-founded Fenway Sports Group (FSG) with Tom Werner. FSG owns several professional sports teams, including the Boston Red Sox and Liverpool FC. Henry is the current principal owner of both the Red Sox and Liverpool FC.
Henry has been married three times and has four children. His first wife was Nancy Owen, with whom he had two daughters. His second wife was Linda Pizzuti, whom he married in 2009. Pizzuti is a media executive and the current CEO of The Boston Globe. The couple has one son. As of October 2024, Henry is ranked by Forbes magazine as the 548th richest person in the world, with an estimated net worth of $6.0 billion.
