Defensemen come in different shapes and sizes, but they all share one common goal: to keep the puck out of their net. A defenseman in hockey is responsible for protecting their own team’s net and clearing the puck away from danger. They typically stay behind the forwards and help out the goaltender when needed.
There are two types of defensemen in hockey: those who stay at home and those who venture up into the offensive zone. Home defensemen are responsible for staying back and protecting their net. They typically don’t venture too far up into the offensive zone, as they need to be ready to defend against any breakaways or odd-man rushes.
Meanwhile, offensive defensemen often join the rush and look to create scoring chances for their team. They tend to be more skilled with the puck than home defensemen and often have a good shot from the point.
No matter what type of defenseman you are, your ultimate goal is to keep the puck out of your net. It’s not an easy job, but someone has to do it. You’ll need to use your stick and body to block shots, tie up opponents in front of the net, and clear the puck out of danger.
