Laces on an American football are the string used to secure the ball. They run through the center of the ball and are made of leather or synthetic materials. There are typically two laces on each side of the ball, but some balls may have only one lace. They are sometimes referred to as “strings” or “ties.” Depending on the size of the ball, the laces may be different. For example, a youth football may have smaller ones than an adult football.
The laces on a football help the quarterback better grip the ball. When the quarterback throws a pass, he wants to be able to spin the ball so that it spirals through the air. This spiral helps the ball travel farther and more accurately. If the ball didn’t have laces, it would be much harder for the quarterback to get the right grip and throw a good pass.
