Kyler Murray stands 5 feet 10 inches (1.78 m) tall and weighs 207 pounds (88 kg). As a result of his short stature as an NFL quarterback, Murray has been compared to players such as Drew Brees and Russell Wilson.
Murray was born in Dallas, Texas, and grew up in Allen, Texas. He attended Allen High School, where he played both football and baseball. As a senior, he threw for 4,713 yards and 54 touchdowns and ran for 1,485 yards and another 19 scores, leading his team to the state championship game. Murray was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for Texas and the USA Today Offensive Player of the Year.
He originally committed to play baseball for the University of Oklahoma, but after being drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the first round of the 2018 Major League Baseball draft, he decided to play football instead. Murray became the Sooners’ starting quarterback as a sophomore in 2018 and led the team to a 12-2 record and a berth in the College Football Playoff. He won the Heisman Trophy, becoming Oklahoma’s seventh Heisman winner.
After his successful 2018 season, Murray declared for the 2019 NFL Draft, where he was selected as the first overall pick by the Cardinals. He signed a four-year contract worth $35 million and decided not to play baseball and commit to playing just football.
Kyler Murray possesses rare athleticism for a quarterback, evidenced by his ability to make plays outside the pocket and run with the ball. He is also known for his strong arm and accuracy. These attributes make him a dangerous dual-threat quarterback who is difficult to defend against.
Despite being undersized for an NFL quarterback at just under 6 feet tall, Murray has shown that he can be successful at the highest level. He will look to continue proving doubters wrong whenever he steps on the field.
