How Did Tony Gwynn Die?
Tony Gwynn, the Hall of Fame baseball player, died on June 16, 2014, at the age of 54 from salivary gland cancer. The cancer had started in his right parotid gland and spread to his left parotid gland, lymph nodes in his neck, and other parts of his body. He had been treated with radiation and chemotherapy, but cancer eventually returned and took his life. His family believes that his use of chewing tobacco caused his cancer.
What Is Salivary Gland Cancer?
Salivary gland cancer is a relatively rare form of cancer, accounting for only about 2% of all cancers of the head and neck region. However, it is important to be aware of the symptoms of this type of cancer so that it can be caught early and treated effectively.
The most common symptom of salivary gland cancer is a lump or mass in the area of the affected gland. Other symptoms can include painless swelling of the gland, difficulty opening the mouth, numbness or tingling in the face, and changes in voice. What Made Tony Gwynn So Good At Baseball?
First and foremost, Gwynn was an incredible contact hitter. He struck out 434 times in his 20-year career, an average of 21 per season. For comparison, the average player strikes out around 100 times per season. This ability to make contact allowed Gwynn to hit for a high average and rack up a ton of hits (he had 3,141 in his career).
In addition to being a great contact hitter, Gwynn was also a very disciplined batter. He knew the strike zone well and was not afraid to take a walk when necessary. This discipline helped him get on base a lot (he had a career of .388 on-base percentage) and score a lot of runs (he scored 1,383 in his career).
Finally, Gwynn was an excellent spray hitter. He hit the ball to all parts of the field and was very tough to defend against. This made it difficult for pitchers to find ways to get him out consistently. All these factors combined make Tony Gwynn one of the best hitters in baseball history. He won eight National League batting titles, was named to 15 All-Star teams, and won five Gold Glove Awards. In 2007, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.
