In fantasy football, bench players are not in the starting lineup but are available to be substituted into the game. These players typically do not accumulate points unless they are in your starting rotation.
*Important* However, in some leagues, bench points may be used when two teams tie with the same number of points. So it’s best to check with your league commissioner and see what rules are being used in the event of a tie.
There are a number of reasons why a fantasy football owner might want to keep players on their bench. The first reason is depth. Injuries are always a possibility in football, and having backups on the bench can help ensure that your team doesn’t miss a beat if one or two starters go down.
Another reason to keep players on the bench is for matchups. Some weeks, the player you have in your starting lineup might have a tough matchup against a top-ranked defense. In those cases, it might make sense to bench that player in favor of a backup with a more favorable matchup.
Finally, bye weeks can also factor in deciding who to start and who to keep on the bench. Each NFL team has one week off during the season, and fantasy football owners need to account for that by having backups ready to go.
