Los Angeles - Freshman Chris Bernardi scored the game-winning goal with 3:41 to play in the second half as LMU defeated UC Riverside 1-0 at Sullivan Field Thursday. In just their second home match of the season, the 20th-ranked Lions (5-2-0) extended their strong start to the season.
After both teams were held scoreless for most of the game, the Lions got the ball in scoring territory as junior Vincent Ocampo dribbled down the middle and fed sophomore Artur Jozkowicz with the ball on the right side of the field. Jozkowicz beat his defender and fed to Bernardi at the 6-yard line for a high kick towards the left goal post to give the Lions their only goal of the game.
The goal was Bernardi's second game-winning goal of the season. His previous game winner came in the Lions' only other home match of the season, a 1-0 win over San Jose State.
"As teams wear down towards the end, you have to overcome that fatigue," Head Coach Paul Krumpe said. "We had chances but we need to put them away. The freshman (Bernardi) did a good job of finishing off his chance."
Freshman goalie Max Young recorded his first career shutout for LMU as he held the Highlanders (1-6-0) scoreless with his four saves. The Lions finished with a season-high 13 corner kicks to go along with 14 shots. Senior Steffen Canty led LMU with three shots, two of which were on goal. Junior Rafael Baca and senior William Johnson had two shots apiece for the Lions.
Bakersfield, Calif. - In its final tune-up before West Coast Conference play begins, 20th-ranked LMU was victimized by an early goal and was upended 1-0 by hosts Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday night. The loss (5-3-0) snaps the Lions' two-game winning streak but, even with the loss, LMU enters WCC play next week with its best record since the conference switched to a double round-robin format in 2004.
The Lions had the most play early, forcing two early corner kicks and bringing a pair of saves out of CSUB goalie Eric Shannon. The Roadrunners had a chance of their own, nearly breaking through in the 15th minute when Ernesto Hinojosa saw his shot come back off the post.
LMU entered the match having won all three previous meetings against the Roadrunners (4-3-1) but last year's game required overtime before the Lions could pull it out. This time, CSUB used Wayne Lampart's 19th-minute goal to take the lead. Lampart advanced the ball up the left and unleashed a shot from outside the penalty box that beat sophomore goalkeeper Jack McCormack.
Los Angeles - Freshman Kelsey Wilson scored her first career goal on a first-half free kick and LMU withstood a final minute flurry from Long Beach State to record a 1-0 victory on Friday afternoon at Sullivan Field. The win extends the Lions' (6-3-1) unbeaten streak to three games and ran their record to a perfect 3-0 all-time against the 49ers (4-5-0).
In a game devoid of many true scoring chances, Wilson's free kick was all the Lions would need. The build-up to the goal saw junior Julie Gallaudet brought down at the edge of the 18-yard box in the 21st minute. With the ball placed in the middle of the field, Wilson could choose to curl it around the wall and into the upper right corner or try to beat the goalie to the upper left side. She chose the latter, using a combination of power and precision to send her left-footed shot past LBSU goalie Nicoline Jorgensen and put the hosts in front.
Los Angeles - LMU scored three goals in the first 25 mnutes and held yet another opponent scoreless at home, blanking Cal State Bakersfield 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at Sullivan Field. The Lions (7-3-1) run their home shutout streak to six games dating back to last season and are unbeaten in their last four matches while improving to 2-0 all-time against the Roadrunners (4-7-0).
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The No. 18 St. John's men's soccer team totaled 14 shots and eight corner kicks, but played Providence to a 0-0 draw in BIG EAST play. Derby Carrillo made two saves to record his fifth shutout this year for St. John's (2-2-4, 1-1-2). Timothy Murray made four saves to lead Providence (4-3-1, 1-2-1).
"Providence is a well-organized and veteran team," said head coach Dr. Dave Masur. "I thought that we passed the ball well and opened up some space, but their keeper made some great saves today."
STORRS, Conn. - The St. John's men's soccer team allowed a goal late in the first half, but could not find the equalizer in a 1-0 defeat to Connecticut. Derby Carrillo made a career-high five saves for St. John's (2-2-3, 1-1-1). Kwame Watson-Siriboe tallied the game-winner in the 40th minute to lead UConn (3-2-2, 2-1-0), while Josh Ford made three saves.
"UConn is always a dangerous team and they played a great game tonight," said head coach Dr. Dave Masur. "It was disappointing to give up a goal right before halftime, but I thought we played much better in the second half and created some great opportunities."
WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer team made it three in a row on Sunday defeating the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights, 2-0, at North Kehoe Field. For the second-consecutive game, the Blue & Gray scored the game-winner early on as the Hoyas posted their seventh shutout of the season and snapped RU's three-game win streak. With the victory, Georgetown improves to 6-2-1 overall and 3-1 in BIG EAST play.

Second Half Surge Pushes Toros Past CS Stanislaus, 4-1
CARSON -- Four second-half goals trumped visiting Cal State Stanislaus' first-half tally, and the result was a 4-1 win over the Warriors on a cool night on Toro Field. Senior Kevin Gallaugher started the deluge with a penalty kick goal in the 68th minute, setting the stage for the offensive comeback to move CSUDH to 5-3-1, 4-2-1 CCAA.
After the Warriors got on the scoreboard first after a Trevor Grimbleby bicycle kick past CSUDH keeper Markus Dickerson in the 18th minute, it was all Toros once the second period began.
Gallaugher equalized with a PK at 68:20 after a Toro was tackled in the box, preceding a string of three goals in a span of eight minutes to put the game away.
Andrew Marinez gave CSUDH the lead for good after collecting a Hiram Rangel feed on the left side, and angling his blast past CSUS keeper Steven Waite, before Greg Piechota slipped behind the Warrior defense and beat Waite 1v1 near post.
