Garden City, N.Y.- The Georgetown University men’s soccer squad went on the road to open the 2009 season and came away with a scoreless tie in double overtime against the Adelphi University Panthers (0-0-1) on Tuesday evening. The Hoyas controlled the tempo of the game, but couldn’t capitalize on opportunities to get the 0-0 tie and to move to 0-0-1 on the season.
“We got behind them a bunch tonight and had a lot of very good opportunities,” said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. “Their keeper came up with some big saves. We created a lot but we didn’t capitalize on opportunities.”
The Hoyas controlled the pace from the opening minutes Seth C’deBaca (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia Prep) and Jose Colchao (Fairfax, Va./Lake Braddock Secondary School) had a number of solid looks at the goal. Meanwhile, the back four allowed just three Panther shots in the first half with keeper Matthew Brutto (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) being forced to save only one ball.
Senior Scott Larrabee (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. / South Bay Force / Loyola High School of Los Angeles) had a chance in the 39th minute but it was blocked as the squads went into the locker room scoreless.

Previewing The 2009 St. John’s Men’s Soccer Team
|
Aug. 26, 2009
QUEENS, N.Y. - After a run to the NCAA College Cup a season ago, the St. John’s men’s soccer team enters the 2009 campaign with high expectations. The Red Storm was 19-3-3 in 2008 and led the nation with 16 shutouts. With returning players accounting for 94.9 percent (37-of-39) of the goals scored last year and the return of the entire defensive line, the Red Storm is the preseason favorite to win the BIG EAST Red Division and has been ranked as high as No. 1 in the preseason polls.
Goalkeepers
Goalkeeping was once again a strength for St. John’s in 2008 as the squad led the nation and set a new-school record with 16 shutouts.
With the graduation of Neal Kitson, a third round selection in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft, the position is up for grabs, however. Redshirt senior Derby Carrillo (South Bay Force / CSU Dominguez Hills / Downey, CA) figures to get the starting nod, but will face competition from solid freshmen Nunzio Belfiore, Rafael Diaz and Alex Naples.
