Dallas, Texas - The Georgetown University men’s soccer team (1-2-0) gave up a lightning-quick strike in the second minute of the contest, and couldn’t find the equalizer on Friday against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane (3-0-0), losing 1-0 in the first game of the SMU - Mi Cocina Soccer Classic in Dallas, Texas.

In an evenly-fought affair, Tulsa’s senior forward Todd Goddard knocked in his third goal of the season in the second minute of the contest, while Eric Burkholder and Chris Taylor picked up the assists.

In the 36th minute, Georgetown junior Conor Neusel (Chesterfield, Mo./Christian Bros. College HS) created a scoring opportunity, but was denied by Tulsa goalkeeper Dominic Cervi. A little less than a minute later, Hoya freshman Jose Colacho (Fairfax, Va./Lake Braddock Secondary School) had Georgetown’s second opportunity of the night blocked away by Ceryi.

Early in the second half, sophomore Scott Larrabee (South Bay SC alumn) took a corner-kick and while GU was down in the attacking zone, freshman Chandler Diggs (Coppell, Texas/Coppell) had a shot on goal saved. Georgetown’s last solid chance at getting the equalizer was a shot by junior Sean Bellomy (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit College Prep) in the 50th minute.

After that point, the Blue and Gray created three more corner-kick opportunities but none resulted in a threat to the Golden Hurricane.

Georgetown took six shots in the contest, as opposed to seven shots for Tulsa. However, the Hoyas did hold the edge in shots-on-goal with four to Tulsa’s two.

GU senior goalkeeper Joe Devine (Exton, Pa./The Haverford School) made one save, a brillant stop after Tulsa got behind the Hoya back line.

"We had a good idea of what they were going to do attact and counter attack like crazy and they did just that," said head coach Brian Wiese. "Give them full credit on their goal. We lost a loose ball near midfield and after playing it ahead, they got a one touch for the score.

"I think we’re a bit disappointed that we knew what they were going to do and we just didn’t handle it the best we could," said Wiese. "They really attacked but they also gave us chances. To be fairm I was really proud of our guys effort as far as trying desparately to get the tying goal. We had the ball in theo box a lot tonight but I didn’t think we pulled the trigger as often as we could have. I was happy how we playd offensively for about 60 minutes tonight. We’re still very young but its just a matter of when we start to gel."

The Hoyas’ next game will be on Sunday, September 9 at 3:30 p.m. EST when the Hoyas take on host and eighth-ranked Southern Methodist University. . Live stats and video of the game can be seen here

Georgetown’s opponent on Sunday, SMU (1-0-1), has qualified for the NCAA Tournament 13-consecutive years and made two College Cup appearances since 2000. The Mustangs were selected first in the Conference-USA preseason poll and played to a 1-1tie against St. Louis University on Aug 31. SMU posted a 17-2-4 record last season and returns seven starters from last years team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament second round.
