Anteaters beat Gonzaga 1-0 in season opener

IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine men’s soccer team (1-0) defeated Gonzaga 1-0 Friday night in the season opener for both teams at Anteater Stadium.

The Anteaters broke the scoreless tie in the 86^th minute as freshman (and former South Bay SC player) Adrian Burgess crossed the ball into the box where freshman Spencer Thompson tapped the ball over to freshman Amani Walker who put the ball away at the 85:49 mark. Walker checked back into the match less than a minute before scoring the game-winning goal.

Freshman keeper Pat Barton had four saves for the Anteaters as he earned the shutout in his first career match. Keeper Vito Higgins had three saves for Gonzaga.

The win is the 100^th win at UCI for Anteater head coach George Kuntz.

Toros Avenge Last Season’s Playoff Defeat With 2-0 Win Over Defending Far West Champion and 6th-Ranked Seattle University

Carson, CA – It wasn’t the Far West Regional, but it sure felt like it. In a playoff-type atmosphere that pitted two perennial contenders in an early regular season match-up, the Toros proved worthy of their place amongst the best in the West as they rode goals by seniors Jose Serpas and Sammy Rivas in an intense 2-0 win over defending Far West Champion and 6th-ranked Seattle University Sunday night at Toro Stadium.

A frenetic pace was evident from the opening kick, with the hosts seizing control of the game’s first 20 minutes. Carmelo Terranova had the first good look in the 14th minute, but a breakaway attempt in which he beat SU’s keeper Emerson DeOliveira to a 50/50 ball sailed wide.

SU picked up momentum after a bicycle kick attempt by Jason Cascio was saved by CSUDH keeper Derby Carrillo, with Carrillo making another save on a Cascio shot just two minutes later. After a Kevin Gallaugher header sailed wide in the 42nd minute, the game intensified when SU’s Jake Ellig was issued a yellow card at 44:05 for stepping, but not stomping, on Terranova’s back.

Spurred by the caution, Mario Guerrero found himself alone from 8 yards out after a scramble, but his sitter sailed high, keeping the contest scoreless heading into the break.

Minutes into the second half, Kris Clark, who provided a spark off the bench, gave the Toros an early opportunity by sending a through ball to a streaking Kyle Holland, but Holland’s blast from 12 yards out sailed high.

The Toros finally broke through in the 67th minute as he took a through ball by Rivas and blasted his shot off the hands of SU’s keeper. The force of his shot was so strong, however, that it trickled by the fallen keeper and into the net for a 1-0 lead.

Seattle turned up its attack after Serpas’ goal which nearly paid dividends in the 84th minute, but a Cascio header sailed both just high and just wide, keeping the Redhawks down one.

Three minutes later, Scott Mariano used that missed SU opportunity to give the Toros breathing room as he dribbled by an SU defender and found two Toros along side him. With another Redhawk hot on his trail, Mariano gave a perfect ball to Rivas, and Rivas added the insurance goal with his shot connecting near post at 87:20, setting off the Toro celebration.

Carrillo notched 5 saves in the win with SU’s Emerson DeOliveira tallying a single save, while CSUDH enjoyed a 4-2 corner kick advantage over SU. In a physical contest, The Toros doubled the Redhawk fouls in each half, earning 16 whistles to SU’s eight.

CSUDH begins CCAA Conference play with road games at Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino next weekend before a stretch of six-consecutive home contests, ending with a September 29 date against perennial power Seattle Pacific.
