Summer Youth Academy - Its not to late to join in!

The South Bay Force Youth Academy is a unique soccer development program designed to provide youngsters ages 4-9 with an opportunity to improve fundamental soccer skills in a fun and safe environment. Our program is unique in a number of ways, a few of those include:

Our staff - Each session is conducted by experienced, trained, and nationally licensed coaches

Our curriculum - Our curriculum was created by nationally licensed coaches, educators, developmental experts and, most importantly, coaches who have their own children in the program

We educate - After sessions we talk about what we did, why we did it, and provide ideas to help the kids at home.

2012 Youth Academy Session Dates

The Summer Youth Academy session dates are as follows:

Time: Friday’s 4:00 - 5:00pm

Cost: $60 per 6-week session

The Youth Academy was created with the goal of teaching proper fundamentals and techniques to enthusiastic and athletic young soccer players before they ingrain bad habits. Our Nationally Licensed club coaches and their highly qualified coaching staff spend approximately ½ of each 1-hour session on instruction and drills, leaving the second ½ for small-sided games in which the kids are encouraged to implement what they have been taught. The players are then given “homework” to hone the skills taught each week to maximize their development.

Former SBF player Irvin Parra wins his 2nd Championship in 2 years

Last year Irvin was a key member of the SBF team that won U.S. Development Academy. Irvin just competed his first professional season with FC 08 HOMBURG by winning the German Oberliga Championship.

SBF Welcomes 8 New Coaches for the 2012 Season

South Bay Force welcomes the following 8 new 2012 Coaches to its growing staff of top-notch professional coaches:

	Ted Eck (G98 Blue) South Bay Force is proud to announce the addition of former US National Team player Ted Eck to its coaching staff. Eck, who has also coaching roles with the LA Galaxy academy and the US Soccer Training Centers, will be coaching a team in the girls u13/going 14 age group. "What an outstanding addition to an already excellent coaching staff," commented Director of Coaching Dan Tobias. "Ted’s extensive background as both a player and coach is very impressive and he’s just really good guy and a great mentor for these young and eager to learn kids."
	Simon Elliott (B99) South Bay Force has hired World Cup, Olympic, English Premier League, MLS and Stanford University star Simon Elliott. Simon has also prepared himself well for life after his Pro and International playing career by obtaining his U.S. Soccer National Coaching license. Career highlights include: World Cup (New Zealand), Olympics (New Zealand), English Premier League (Fulham), MLS (Champion), CONCACAF Champions League (Champion), and Stanford University (Final Four, All-American)
	Kevin Gallaugher (B98 White & co-coach B04) Kevin played 3 years locally at Cal State Dominguez Hills where he was the team captain for 2 years and won awards as National Player of the Year, NCAA Final Four MVP, NCAA Firts team, as well as CCAA MVP and Newcomer awards. Kevin had previously coached SBF U8 & U10 teams in 2010 and we welcome him back.
	Courtney Moseley (G99 Blue & G00) Courtney played for Torrance United, a predecessor to South Bay Force, in the mid 90’s and excelled at Bishop Montgomery HS, making CIF Finals among other awards. Courtney played 4 years at the University of Arizona where the team was the 2004 PAC-10 Champions (coached by Dan Tobias). Courtney has coached at FRAM and now at South Bay Force for the last 4 years as well as is working with LMU.
	Paige Peel (G03 Blue & co-coach G04)
	Frank Reyes (B00 Blue) Frank took over coaching responsibility for the B00 Blue team mid season 2011 and under his outstanding tutelage, the team has prospered and finshed 2011 tournaments as both Champions and Finalists. Keep up the good work Frank & team!
	Dan Tobias (G94 and G96 Director of Coaching, Girls Dan played locally with the Manhattan Beach Hurricanes, at Mira Costa High School, and at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Dan has extensive coaching experience with 7 seasons as NCAA Division-1 Head Coach at University of Arizona, 5 seasons at Washington State, and 4 seasons as NCAA Assistant Coach at Cal Poly SLO. Dan’s in-dept experience also includes US National team Staff Coach for U17, Region 4 ODH Head Coach U17/U19 and numerous other accomplishments as a coach.

Jose Villarreal (SBF) returns from Injury

CARSON, Calif. --The professional career of Los Angeles Galaxy Homegrown product Jose Villarreal (South Bay Force) may not have begun as he would have liked, but after recovering from an knee injury cut his preseason short, the 18-year-old midfielder is eager to make an impact with the defending MLS Cup champions.

Signed in December to a Homegrown contract, Villarreal's preseason ended in early February as the midfielder underwent surgery to repair bilateral lower-leg compartment syndrome. The injury did not deter the midfielder from Inglewood, Calif., who quickly returned to training and even traveled with the LA Galaxy U-18 squad to Spain for the Real Sociedad XXVII Youth Invitational Tournament.

On Monday, Villarreal(SBF) appeared to be back in form, making a highly productive 20 minute performance for the Galaxy in their 1-0 reserve league victory over the Seattle Sounders.

"I’m definitely getting better, I’m working with the trainers and getting into shape, so I’ll be fine," said Villarreal. "I’m just trying to stay focused and positive when I’m training with my teammates and working hard so hopefully I can play."

Against Seattle, Villarreal made an immediate offensive impact for the Galaxy after he came on the field in the 70th minute for forward Pat Noonan. In the 75th minute, the young midfielder forced a diving save from Seattle goalkeeper Brian Meredith before nearly scoring again just a minute later.

Although Villarreal(SBF) was unable to tally against the Sounders, it did not prevent him from earning the praise of his teammates, including forward Adam Cristman. Villarreal admits that the veteran forward, who at 27 is nine years Villarreal's senior, has been instrumental in helping the young midfielder, particularly with his work on the defensive side of the ball.

"He’s a young guy and he’s a great talent," Cristman said. "I’m 10 years ahead of Jose, and there are things that I can help him to improve his game, because it’s a big jump from youth soccer to college and it’s another big jump from college to the pros. For Jose making that straightaway jump, it’s a steep learning curve and he’s doing a great job and he’s going to develop really well.

"He’s got a lot of great athletic attributes. And I think he’s going to be a guy that within a year that is going to develop and get some minutes on any team."

Cristman was not alone in his praise of Villarreal's return as Galaxy reserve coach Curt Onalfo agreed that the South Bay Force and LA Galaxy Academy star has the skills that could lead to future success.

"He’s another talented young player and just like any of them, they have to continue to learn all the things that you need to learn as a pro about how to move defensively, but he’s another guy who instinctively is very good," Onalfo said. "He’s very comfortable on the ball and has to adapt to the speed of play, but when they do that consistently, that’s when you see more success."

SBF Players represent 5 of 11 starters in LA Galaxy Academy vs Osasuna

5 of the 11 starters in the LA Galaxy Academy vs Osasuna match are from South Bay Force. 4 played for Todd Saldana’s USSDA National Championship team last and all represented us at the Premier Level in Coast Soccer League. Jose Villarreal, Jaime Villarreal(brothers of SBF coach Alexis), Javan Torre, Juan Cervantes and Oscar Sorto.

Irvin Parra continues to do well in Germany with Homburg FC. SBF players Jose Rivera and Pedro Lugo are traveling to Germany also to practice with Homburg FC.

We have an excellent number of players in ODP and many that have received invites to US Soccer Training Center and Id2.

We are off to a very good 2012.

B93 (Boys Under 18) Nomads Coaches Showcase Champion

Boys U18 (Saldana) - Nomads March Coaches Showcase Champions!

The South Bay Force Boys B93 team led by Coach Todd Saldana are Champions of the Nomads March 2012 Coaches Showcase. After three very competitive pool games against the Hawaii Nike Rush (4-0), Nomads Los Angeles (1-1), and CYSL Nado Select (0-1), the boys made it to the semi-finals where they had another tough game in the wind and pouring rain but came away with another big 2-0 win against the Chula Vista Rangers. The team once again faced CYSL Nado Select in the finals. After 60 minutes of regulation time the game was tied. The boys then played 2 very intense ten minute overtimes with no score, but ultimately won in a PK shoot-out.

College Readiness Program Debuts

As part of South Bay Force’s commitment to total player development, we have begun our College Readiness Program (CRP). The CRP is a step-by-step lecture series for parents and players designed to guide college bound student-athletes through the college soccer selection and acceptance process.

Seniors and Juniors participated in their first discussion covering topics such as selecting schools, taking school visits, and communicating with coaches to name a few.

Freshmen and sophomores will be participating in their first discussion at the end of August (location and time TBD).

The CRP is conducted by Dr. Lee Hancock; Lee is a SBF coach but also a professor at Cal State Dominguez Hills and education consultant. Todd Saldana and Jim Millender, two highly successful Division 1 head coaches and current Directors of SBF boys and girls programs, support Lee in his program.

Goalkeeper training for South Bay Force teams occurs weekly at North High School in Torrance and is coached by Joe Velasco. Training sessions are determined by both age and skill level. If you have any questions as to which session your keeper should attend, please contact Coach Velasco at: socal_keepercoach@yahoo.com. Keepers should attend a minimum of 2 sessions per month and ideally, weekly throughout Fall League play (September - December).
